happy birthday nisha and sunju! (or so we think)
to celebrate nisha and sunju’s 11th birthdays (birthdays aren’t officially recorded in nepal so sometimes the kids just pick a date) we baked the same tie-dye cupcakes that my notre dame soccer team and i sold to sponsor the three girls here at kopila valley school (http://bit.ly/lq9Vz0). You should of seen how big the kids’ eyes got when i told them that at notre dame we sell them for $2 each or the equivalent of 160 Nepali Rupees. our two friends who are pilots for the world food programme are pretty much the only people in surkhet with a working oven so we drove over to their house to bake the cupcakes. it was a really big deal for the girls, they’ve only been in a car a few times(i even had to show them how to open the door) and when i asked if they had ever used an oven before they said they’ve only seen one in a movie!
when we brought the cupcakes home to celebrate with everyone else, most of the kids started eating the cupcakes with the paper still on it! the kids laughed so hard when i showed them how to eat it the right way and they were all so amazed by the bright colors inside. my friend Maddie Fox and I always joke that we are saving the world one cupcake at a time but after coming here and meeting the 3 girls that my team sponsors, i’m starting to think it might not be a joke after all :)
Makes my heart SO HAPPY.
